High blood levels of LDL-cholesterol are a main risk factor for the development of atherosclerosis, cardiovascular but they cause diseases in only about 50% of the affected individuals. Lowering of the cholesterol concentrations by dietary measures or medication changes this numerical ratio only slightly. Atherosclerosis must therefore imply more, since the deposition of lipids in the elastic and muscular areas of medium-sized and large arteries cannot explain the severe vascular lesions. Examining these lesions more closely one discovers biological processes, which typically resemble the cellular reactions of chronic inflammations such as pancreatitis, hepatitis, or rheumatoid arthritis. |
